Garbage Bread

Garbage bread is seasoned hamburger, crisp bacon, and two cheeses, all wrapped up in a warm crusty dough. This appetizer is perfect for game day or any party.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 pound bacon, chopped
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • 8 ounces Velveeta, cubed into small pieces
  • 1 1/2 cups mozzarella
  • 1 (13.8-oz) tube refrigerated pizza dough

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 425°F (218ºC). Place in the oven rack in the middle of the oven cavity. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray with nonstick cooking spray; set aside.
  • In a 12-inch skillet cook diced bacon (1/2 pound), over medium heat, until crispy, Remove cooked bacon with a slotted spoon to a paper towel-lined plate. Remove all but a tablespoon of bacon grease, store or discard.

  • Add beef (1 pound), onion (1 cup), garlic (1 tablespoon), Cajun seasoning (1 teaspoon), black pepper (1/4 teaspoon), and Worcestershire sauce (1 tablespoon) to the skillet and continue to cook, over medium heat, until there's no longer any pink in the beef. Remove any excess fat.

  • In a large mixing bowl stir together bacon and ground beef mixture, until evenly combined.
  • Pop open pizza dough (1 tube) and roll out, on a lightly floured surface, into a 15X10 inch rectangle.

  • Spread the meat mixture in an even layer on top of the dough, leaving a one-inch border on 3 sides.

  • Sprinkle the top of of meat mixture with Velveeta cubes (8 ounces) and mozzarella (1 1/2 cups).

  • Starting with the long side of the dough, roll up jelly-roll style. Pinch the edges together to seal.

  • Place the seam side down on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown. Allow the bread to cool for 5-10 minutes before slicing.

Notes

  1. Cool It! Make sure to cool the filling completely, or the crust will start to melt. The crust should be rolled out large enough to hold the filling, but also thick enough so it doesn’t break when rolling.
  2. Leave A Margin: When rolling the bread, be sure to keep the edges clean (no juices or filling) and keep it tight. Seal the edges thoroughly. You will get a nice swirl when cutting the baked bread! 
  3. Variations: this is Garbage Bread which pretty much means you can use any ingredient in the fridge! You can use pepper jack or cheddar cheese, any ground meat (chicken or sausage). You can also use sauteed veggies (I suggest onions and/or peppers) or add a little pizza sauce. Just make sure that you don’t overfill the bread.  
  4. Frozen French Bread: You can also use frozen French bread, found in the freezer section of your grocery store. Thaw and roll out as instructed.
