This ranch potatoes recipe is one of those easy side dishes that goes with just about everything. Tender potatoes are tossed with ranch seasoning, butter, and simple pantry ingredients, then baked until golden brown with crispy edges and fluffy centers. Whether you’re serving them alongside grilled chicken, burgers, pork chops, or holiday favorites, they’re always a hit.
One of my favorite things about this recipe is how simple it is to make. Everything comes together in a single baking dish, which means less cleanup and more time enjoying dinner. The ranch flavor soaks into every bite, creating a savory, comforting potato side dish that’s perfect for both weeknight meals and family gatherings.
If your family loves potatoes as much as mine does, you’re in for a treat. These ranch potatoes are loaded with flavor, easy to customize, and guaranteed to disappear fast.

✨ Before You Begin
✨ Cut the potatoes evenly. Try to keep the potato pieces roughly the same size so they cook at the same rate and finish tender at the same time.
✨ Don’t skip the oil. The oil helps the ranch seasoning stick to the potatoes and encourages those delicious crispy, golden edges.
✨ Give the potatoes space. Spread them into an even layer in the baking dish. Overcrowding can cause the potatoes to steam instead of roast.
✨ Use your favorite ranch seasoning. A packet of Hidden Valley Ranch seasoning works perfectly, but any ranch seasoning mix you enjoy will work well here.
✨ Stir once during baking. Giving the potatoes a quick stir halfway through cooking helps them brown more evenly and prevents sticking.
✨ Serve them hot. Ranch potatoes are at their absolute best straight from the oven when the edges are crisp and the centers are fluffy.
What’s The Best Potato For This Recipe?
This recipe is great with many different types of potatoes. My favorite is Russet potatoes—that said, Russets are my favorite in most recipes! Red potatoes and gold baby potatoes are great in this wonderful cheesy ranch sauce. Yukon Gold potatoes is fabulous, too. You can also mix up a few varieties; you really can’t go wrong with any potato!
Ingredients + Key Notes
Potatoes: Russet potatoes are my favorite for this recipe because they become wonderfully fluffy on the inside while developing crispy, golden edges. Yukon Gold potatoes are also a great choice if you prefer a creamier texture.
Ranch Seasoning Mix: This is where all that classic ranch flavor comes from. Hidden Valley Ranch seasoning is the most popular option, but any dry ranch seasoning packet will work.
Butter: Adds richness and helps the potatoes brown beautifully while giving the finished dish that irresistible comfort-food flavor.
Oil: Helps the potatoes roast instead of steam and creates those crispy edges everyone fights over.
Chicken Broth: Adds extra savory flavor and keeps the potatoes moist as they bake. It’s a simple ingredient that makes a big difference.
Fresh Parsley: Optional, but a sprinkle of fresh parsley adds color and freshness to balance the rich ranch flavor.
🥣 How To Make Ranch Potatoes
Start by preheating your oven and lightly greasing a large baking dish. Wash the potatoes well, then cut them into evenly sized chunks so they cook uniformly.
Add the potatoes directly to the prepared baking dish. Drizzle with the oil and melted butter, then sprinkle the ranch seasoning over the top. Pour in the chicken broth and toss everything together until the potatoes are evenly coated.
Spread the potatoes into an even layer and bake, stirring once halfway through cooking. As they roast, the potatoes will become tender while the edges turn beautifully golden brown.
Continue baking until the potatoes are fork-tender and lightly crisp around the edges. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired and serve immediately while hot.
⭐ Pro Tips
⭐ Cut the potatoes into evenly sized cubes. Uniform pieces cook at the same rate and ensure every bite is perfectly tender.
⭐ Use a rimmed baking sheet underneath the casserole dish. This catches any bubbling overflow and makes cleanup much easier.
⭐ Test for tenderness before adding the ranch dressing. A fork should slide easily into the potatoes before you stir in the cheese, bacon, and dressing.
⭐ Shred your own cheese when possible. Freshly shredded cheddar and Monterey Jack melt more smoothly than pre-shredded cheese and create a creamier casserole.
⭐ Cook the bacon until crisp. Crispy bacon provides the best texture and flavor contrast against the creamy potatoes.
⭐ Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving. This gives the cheese sauce time to settle and makes the casserole easier to scoop.
⭐ Customize the flavor. Stir in 1/2 cup chopped onion before baking or add 1/2 cup sour cream with the ranch dressing for an even creamier, richer casserole.
Storing + Reheating + Freezing + Make-Ahead Instructions
Storing: Allow the ranch potatoes to cool completely, then transfer them to an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
Reheating: For the best texture, reheat the potatoes in a 400°F oven for 10-15 minutes or until heated through. You can also reheat them in an air fryer for a few minutes to help restore their crispy edges. Microwave reheating works in a pinch, though the potatoes will be softer.
Freezing: While you can freeze ranch potatoes, the texture won’t be quite as crisp after thawing. Store in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
Make-Ahead: You can cut the potatoes up to 24 hours in advance. Store them submerged in cold water in the refrigerator to prevent browning. Drain and dry thoroughly before proceeding with the recipe.
- You can also fully bake the potatoes a day ahead and reheat them in a hot oven just before serving.
What To Serve With Ranch Potatoes
These creamy ranch potatoes pair well with just about any comfort-food main dish. Try serving them alongside Traditional Meatloaf for a classic family dinner, Oven Baked BBQ Chicken Thighs for a sweet-and-savory combination, or Crockpot Pork Tenderloin when you need an easy meal that’s big on flavor.
They’re also delicious with Grilled Pork Chops, Grilled Chicken Kebabs, or your favorite burgers fresh off the grill. Whether you’re feeding the family on a busy weeknight or putting together a casual weekend dinner, these ranch potatoes make an easy, crowd-pleasing side dish.
To round out the meal, add a fresh and crunchy side like my Copycat KFC Coleslaw, a simple vegetable such as Southern Green Beans, or my Calico Beans—my husband’s absolute favorite baked bean recipe. Together, they make a hearty, crowd-pleasing dinner that’s perfect for family meals, potlucks, and backyard cookouts.
