Let’s make a cozy little treat that always disappears fast.
✨ Before You Start
✨ Toast the pecans. A quick 10–15 minutes at 350°F deepens the nutty flavor and makes these taste truly special.
✨ Don’t over-process. Pulse the wafers and pecans until finely chopped, not pasty — texture keeps them interesting.
✨ Chill if sticky. If the mixture feels too soft to roll, refrigerate it for 20–30 minutes to firm it right up.
✨ Coating options abound. Vanilla wafer crumbs, powdered sugar, cocoa powder, cinnamon sugar, or coconut all work beautifully.
✨ Gets better with age. These are one of the rare treats that actually improve after a day or two.
Rum Balls Ingredients + Key Notes
A quick guide to the ingredients that really matter:
Vanilla wafers: The sweet base of the mixture. You can use all vanilla wafers or a mix of wafers + sugar wafers for extra texture.
Pecan pieces: Toasting them is optional but highly encouraged. It adds a deeper, warmer flavor.
Honey: Helps bind everything together while keeping the texture soft and chewy.
Rum and bourbon: You don’t need expensive bottles here. A good mid-range rum and bourbon will give you plenty of flavor.
Nut-free version: Swap the pecans for more crushed cookies, graham crackers, or even pound cake crumbs so the mixture still binds properly.
🥣 How to Make Rum Balls
Here’s a quick look at how to assemble these easy Rum Balls (full instructions in the recipe card below).
Make the crumbs: Pulse wafers in a food processor until finely ground. Transfer to a bowl.
Chop the pecans: Pulse the pecans until finely chopped and stir into the wafer crumbs.
Mix: Add the honey, rum, and bourbon. Stir until everything is fully combined.
Shape: Roll into 1-inch balls.
Coat: Roll in powdered sugar, wafer crumbs, cocoa, or your favorite coating.
Variations and Substitutions
No nuts: Skip the pecans and replace them with extra vanilla wafer crumbs or crushed cookies for a similar texture.
Without cocoa powder or chocolate: This recipe naturally leans more vanilla-forward, but you can omit cocoa and still get a rich, flavorful result.
Alcohol-free version: Replace the rum and bourbon with apple juice or orange juice for a kid-friendly option.
⭐ Pro Tips
⭐ Roast the pecans first
Toasted pecans bring deeper, warmer flavor and make these rum balls taste even richer.
⭐ Choose your coating
Powdered sugar is classic, but cocoa powder, cinnamon sugar, coconut, or extra wafer crumbs all work well too.
⭐ Let them rest at least 24 hours
The flavor gets smoother, deeper, and more balanced after they sit overnight.
⭐ Use gloves for rolling
This keeps the mixture from sticking to your hands and makes shaping much easier.
⭐ Sift the coating onto a tray
This makes it faster and easier to coat the rum balls evenly.
Frequently Asked Questions
◆ Can I freeze Rum Balls?
Yes! Rum balls freeze beautifully for up to 6 months. Store them in an airtight container and thaw in the refrigerator before serving.
◆ Do Rum Balls need to be refrigerated?
Refrigeration helps them hold their shape and gives the flavors time to meld. Store them tightly sealed in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.
◆ Can I make these nut-free?
Absolutely. Replace the pecans with extra crushed cookies, graham cracker crumbs, or cake crumbs so the mixture still has the right texture.
◆ Can I use different liquors?
Yes. Spiced rum, whiskey, or an all-bourbon version can all work well. Just keep the total liquid amount the same.
◆ Can kids eat Rum Balls?
No. These contain uncooked alcohol, so they are not kid-friendly.

- 1/2 cup honey
- 1/3 cup Bourbon
- 1/3 cup dark rum
Instructions

Can you double the amount of alcohol?
Hey Desiree. I don’t think the ratios would work with double the alcohol. Great idea though!!
Hi! How many rumballs does this make approximately?
Best way to store them?
Storing in the fridge, in an airtight container, is best!
I’m confused on this recipe. It says to grind the vanilla wafers then the pecans then it says mix them together then it says add the honey bourbon and rum in there and mix everything together then it says to roll it in the vanilla wafers but how? Are u making a separate bowl?
Hi Debbie. That’s an editing error. Sorry about that. I’ve updated the recipe. If you roll the rum balls in wafers they would be additional to the 12 ounces. <3 Happy Holidays!
These rum balls are incredibly easy delicious! Yum ??
Thanks, Kyle! Glad you like them 😀
Can i use almonds or cashews?
Hi Heth. I think either one of those would make a delicious variation! 🙂
