This Crockpot Hot Chocolate is rich, velvety, and deeply chocolatey — the kind that feels more like a dessert than a drink. It’s made with real melted chocolate (not cocoa powder), sweetened condensed milk for built-in creaminess, and just a handful of pantry ingredients. Best of all, the slow cooker does all the work, making this the ultimate hot chocolate for parties, holidays, and cozy winter nights.
This recipe comes from my sister Chrissy, who’s famous in our family for hosting big, festive gatherings. When the weather cools down, this crockpot hot chocolate is always on her buffet table — and it disappears fast. It’s our go-to Christmas hot chocolate and the one friends and family request every single year.
If you’ve ever wondered “Can you make hot chocolate in a crockpot?” or needed a foolproof way to keep hot chocolate warm for a crowd, this is the recipe you want.
✨ Before You Begin
✨ Use a 6-quart slow cooker for the best fit and even heating.
✨ Always cook hot chocolate on LOW heat only to prevent scorching.
✨ Stir occasionally while it heats so the chocolate melts smoothly.
Why This Crockpot Hot Chocolate Is Extra Creamy
Unlike many slow cooker hot chocolate recipes, this one skips cocoa powder entirely and uses real melted chocolate for maximum flavor and texture.
-
Sweetened condensed milk adds sweetness and body, preventing a watery drink
-
Heavy cream + whole milk create a rich, silky mouthfeel
-
Milk chocolate chips melt smoothly without bitterness
-
Low, gentle heat keeps everything emulsified and velvety
The result is a hot chocolate that stays smooth and luscious — even after hours in the crockpot.
Crockpot Hot Chocolate Ingredients + Key Notes
This is just a quick glance at what you’ll need. For exact measurements and the full ingredient list, head down to the recipe card below.
- Heavy Whipping Cream – This is the key to that luxurious, dessert-like texture. You can substitute whole milk if needed, but it won’t be quite as rich.
- Whole Milk – Whole milk gives the hot chocolate body and balance. Lower-fat milk can taste thin.
- Sweetened Condensed Milk – Absolutely essential. It sweetens and thickens the hot chocolate in one step.
- Vanilla Extract – Use pure vanilla for the best flavor.
- Milk Chocolate Chips – Milk chocolate keeps the drink creamy and crowd-friendly. Semisweet or dark chocolate can make it overly rich.
🥣 How to Make Crockpot Hot Chocolate
Add the heavy cream, milk, sweetened condensed milk, and vanilla extract to your slow cooker and whisk until combined. Stir in the chocolate chips.
Cover and cook on LOW for 1½ to 2 hours, stirring occasionally, until the chocolate is fully melted and the mixture is hot and smooth. Before serving, whisk well to fully blend everything, then ladle into mugs and enjoy.
⭐ Pro Tips
⭐ Stir before serving
Chocolate can settle slightly as it sits. A quick whisk right before serving ensures every mug is perfectly smooth.
⭐ Keep it warm for parties
Once heated, switch the crockpot to WARM. Stir every 30–45 minutes if serving for several hours.
⭐ Milk chocolate really matters
Because this recipe already includes cream and condensed milk, milk chocolate gives the best balance. Dark or semisweet can taste too intense for many guests.
⭐ Set up a toppings bar
Mini marshmallows, whipped cream, caramel drizzle, crushed candy canes, chocolate shavings, and sprinkles turn this into a fun self-serve station.
Crockpot Hot Chocolate Variations
These easy variations help this recipe work for everyone:
- Peppermint Hot Chocolate: Stir in ½–1 teaspoon peppermint extract at the end.
- White Chocolate: Swap milk chocolate chips for white chocolate chips.
- Salted Caramel: Add ¼ cup caramel sauce and finish with flaky sea salt.
- Dairy-Free: Use full-fat oat milk and coconut condensed milk; replace chocolate with dairy-free chips.
- Adult / Spiked: Add Irish cream, peppermint schnapps, or dark rum to individual mugs.
🔬 The Science Behind Crockpot Hot Chocolate
Sweetened condensed milk contains concentrated milk solids and sugar, which naturally thicken the mixture as it warms. Combined with the fat from heavy cream, this prevents separation and keeps the hot chocolate smooth — even after hours in the slow cooker.
Storage + Reheating + Make-Ahead
- Make Ahead: This hot chocolate can be made earlier in the day and kept on warm until serving.
- Refrigerate: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
- Reheat: Gently reheat on the stovetop or in the microwave, stirring well.

Notes
- Heavy Whipping Cream: I only use heavy whipped cream in this recipe. It really creates a lusciously rich drink. That said if you want to cut back on the richness, substitute the heavy cream with whole milk.
- Milk: I only use whole milk in this recipe.
- Sweetened Condensed Milk: This ingredient is super important! It makes the hot chocolate extra creamy and actually makes it have the perfect milky flavor.
- Vanilla Extract: Use pure vanilla extract, not artificial, for the best flavor. Use pure vanilla extract, not artificial, for the best flavor.
- Milk Chocolate Chips: You can switch up the chocolate chips if you'd like. I prefer Milk chocolate because the mixture is already super-rich. I find that semisweet makes it too rich. It would be yummy if you made this with white chocolate chips or even salted caramel morsels.
- Give it a Final Stir! Before you ladle into mugs, give the mixture a final stir.
