These little Pretzel Snowmen definitely take less time than putting together a three-tiered frosty friend, plus you can do it without mittens and scarves. You’ll also have a sweet-and-salty snack to show for your work!

Whether you’re shoveling snow or sunbathing, you’ll still be able to enjoy these tasty, festive treats with a warm mug of hot chocolate.

Holidays bring out all the closeted kitchen creatives – reindeer made out of Nutter Butters, Santa hat Oreos, and Rice Krispie treats transformed into Christmas trees (I’m still waiting on someone to create the no-calorie versions of these, FYI). They’re all almost too cute to eat!

My little Pretzel Snowmen are no exception – they’re super simple to make and guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

There are really just three ingredients here: pretzels, chocolate, and icing. The Ghiradelli melting wafers are similar to almond bark or other melting chocolates, but Ghiradelli is known for its flavorful, high-quality product and I think the chocolate’s noticeable enough in this recipe to splurge on the best.

Melting wafers are basically a combination of sugar and special fats (with or without cocoa depending on whether it’s milk or white chocolate) that melt easily but return to a solid form quickly. You can also store treats made with melting chocolates at room temperature rather than occupying precious refrigerator space.

Sometimes I use the microwave for melting chocolate since it can save time if I just need to incorporate it into a recipe for brownies or cupcakes.

When I have lots of things to dip, though, I prefer the double-boiler, stovetop method. I generally don’t have to worry about scorching the chocolate, plus it holds the chocolate at the perfect, warm stage for lots of dipping.

Melting the chocolate is actually the hardest part of this recipe.

All you’ll need to do next is group six pretzels, dunk the bottom 3/4 in white chocolate, then the top 1/4 in milk chocolate, and top them off with a chocolate-coated brim for the hat (with some chilling time in the freezer).

A little decoration with store-bought cookie icing is all that’s left to pull off these super cute snacks! Kiddos (the ones who are old enough to help decorate without squeezing the icing directly into their mouths) can even help out here.

Pretzel Snowmen are light and crispy, chocolatey, and just the right combination of salty and sweet to eat a few without ruining your dinner (though it can be done if you’re up for the challenge).

They’re perfect for a school party or cookie swap and make great hostess gifts as you make the rounds this holiday season.

  • 1 Bag Mini Pretzel Sticks
  • 1 8 Ounce Bag Ghiradelli white chocolate melting wafers
  • 1 8 Ounce Bag Ghiradelli milk chocolate melting wafers
  • 1 Package Wilton candy cane icing transfers
  • 1 Tube black cookie icing
  • 1 Tube orange cookie icing


  1. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Using a double boiler, melt the white chocolate wafers
  3. While the chocolate is melting group together 6 pretzel sticks for each snowman
  4. Once the white chocolate is melted, dip pretzel sticks 3/4 of the way into the white chocolate, and place them on the cookie sheet next to each other to make the snowman face.
  5. Repeat steps with the remaining pretzel groups.
  6. Place cookie sheet into the freezer for 30 minutes.
  7. While pretzels are in the freezer melt the milk chocolate.
  8. Once the 30 minutes is up, pull the tray out of the freezer.
  9. Carefully pick up Snowman face and dip the uncoated top 1/4 of the pretzels into the milk chocolate.
  10. Place back onto cookie sheet and repeat steps with remaining snowman faces.
  11. Grab 24 more pretzel sticks and dip them each fully into the milk chocolate, and use a fork to pick them
  12. up and lightly tap the side of the pot to shake the excess chocolate off.
  13. Place the fully dipped pretzel stick where the milk chocolate and white chocolate meet on the Snowman. This will act as the base of the top hat.
  14. Carefully peel off the icing transfer and place on the top left corner.
  15. Using the black icing, pipe eyes and a mouth.
  16. Using the orange icing, pipe on the nose.
  17. Let snowmen sit in the fridge for 1 hour before enjoying.

Recipe Notes For Pretzel Snowmen:

Chocolate Wafers – You can find Ghiradelli wafers in many grocery stores, as well as places like Walmart, Target, or Michael’s. They’re also available at and other online stores. Ghiradelli makes dark chocolate wafers too, and they’re a great substitute for the milk chocolate in this recipe if you want a little more chocolate flavor.

Icing Transfers – These may be a little harder to find than the wafers, depending on where you live (though online is always an option). As an alternative, you can substitute holiday sprinkles like snowflakes or holly. Sprinkles will either need to be added carefully after dipping the hat so they’ll stick to the chocolate or you can attach them with a dot or two of cookie icing.
