Turn your hot dogs into the star of the dinner show with my quick and easy hot dog chili. Chili dogs are an American classic that just about everyone loves, and this is the best recipe for homemade chili dogs, chili fries, nachos, or chili burgers.
It’s a bit sweeter than classic chili and made without beans, so it has the perfect thick, meaty consistency for spooning over everything without running everywhere. Whether you’re making dinner for the family, feeding a crowd on game day, or planning an easy tailgating-style meal, this recipe always disappears fast.
One of my first jobs as a teenager was working in a clothing store at the mall, and almost every shift I’d head to Orange Julius for a chili dog at lunch. I still love them to this day.

Let’s make some hot dog chili!
What Is Hot Dog Chili?
Hot dog chili is a mild, slightly sweet beef chili made specifically for topping hot dogs and other foods. As it cooks, the beef is mashed into a finer texture, giving it that smooth, spoonable consistency that works perfectly on chili dogs.
What Makes Hot Dog Chili Different?
- No beans — smoother texture for topping
- Finer crumble — almost sauce-like
- Slightly sweeter + tangier than regular chili
- Thinner than bowl chili, but still thick enough to sit on a hot dog
✨ Before You Begin
✨ Use 80/20 ground beef for the best flavor and texture—it stays juicy without being greasy.
✨ If you prefer a leaner option, ground turkey works beautifully too.
✨ Low-sodium beef broth lets you control the salt while adding depth.
✨ Keep the chili simmering uncovered so it thickens naturally and the flavors concentrate.
✨ Want to make it spicy? Add diced jalapeños, cayenne, or chipotle in adobo to taste.
Hot Dog Chili Ingredients:
No beans — this is a classic hot dog chili sauce.
Ground Beef or Ground Turkey: I used 80/20 ground beef for the best flavor. If you want to cut down on fat, use lean ground beef, ground turkey, or ground chicken. Remember, reducing the fat also reduces the overall flavor.
Beef Broth: I like to use low-sodium broth so I can control the overall sodium better in the recipe.
Tomato Sauce: The perfect base for chili.
Ketchup: Add the perfect tomato flavor with just the right amount of sweetness for this chili.
Chili Powder: This brings the perfect chili flavor to the chili.
Salt + Black Pepper: Finishing things off with the perfect seasoning.
Brown Sugar: The brown sugar adds the perfect amount of sweetness to make this the best hot dog chili, evah!
Onion Powder + Garlic Powder: Using these dried powders round out the seasoning perfectly.
Worcestershire Sauce: This adds tremendous depth of flavor to beef-based chili.
More Optional Chili Dog Toppings
I like to set up a toppings bar and let everyone top their chili dogs as they like! Here’s what I like to put out:
- Cheese: finely grated. Cheddar cheese is the classic on these but any cheese will work. My son likes his with Pepper Jack
- Onion: minced yellow or white if you want a more mellow taste
- Jalapenos: fresh or pickled
- Crispy Fried Onions: you know the ones in the jar.
- Mustard: I serve ballpark-style mustard
- Crumbled Bacon
- A Variety Of Hot Sauces
How To Make Hot Dog Chili Recipe
In a saucepan on the stovetop, add the ground beef and beef broth. Use a potato masher to break the beef into very fine pieces as it cooks — this is what gives hot dog chili its signature smooth texture.
Once the beef is mostly cooked, stir in the remaining ingredients. Bring everything to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat and let it simmer uncovered for about 25–30 minutes, or until thickened to your liking.
Spoon over hot dogs and serve.
⭐ Pro Tips
⭐ Mash while you cook: Use a potato masher to break the meat into tiny bits—it gives that smooth, pourable chili texture.
⭐ Adjust thickness: If the chili feels too thick, add a splash of broth or water. Too thin? Simmer longer uncovered until it reaches your favorite consistency.
⭐ Make it your way: For extra spice, stir in diced jalapeños, cayenne, or chipotle. For kids, keep it mild and serve hot sauce on the side.
⭐ Flavor boost: A small splash of Worcestershire or a pinch of smoked paprika adds irresistible depth.
Why Is My Hot Dog Chili Too Watery?
- Didn’t simmer long enough
- Too much liquid added
- Not enough fat rendered from beef
- Didn’t break the meat down finely
What to Serve With Hot Dog Chili
Classic Ways to Serve It
As I mentioned above, we use this recipe to make homemade chili dogs or chili fries. We make frozen french fries, then smother them with this chili and top it all with nacho cheese — I mean… please!
We also love it served like the iconic Southern California fast food joint, Tommy Burgers, on a cheeseburger. Chili burgers are delicious, and over hot dogs, hamburgers, baked potatoes, or even fries, this is your ticket to chili-smothered nirvana!
Creative Ways to Use It
This hot dog chili is surprisingly versatile beyond the classic chili dog. Try spooning it over crispy fries with melted cheese for an easy chili cheese fries situation, or use it to top Country Potatoes with a fried egg for a hearty, diner-style meal.
It’s also a great way to dress up a simple baked potato when you want something filling, cozy, and just a little indulgent.
Easy Side Dishes
Well, of course, the hot dog and bun goes without saying! I like to serve this with a bag of great quality chips, or something cool and creamy to balance the richness like KFC Coleslaw.
Classic sides like Macaroni Salad, Dill Pickle Pasta Salad, or Ina Garten Potato Salad all work beautifully here and round out the meal perfectly.
Storing + Freezing Tips + Make-Ahead
How Long Can You Keep This In The Fridge? Store these chili leftovers in an airtight container. It can last for 3-4 days. Microwave leftovers to heat up.
Can You Freeze This? Yes. Chilis are freezer-friendly. It can be stored in the freezer for 4-6 months.
Make-Ahead Tips: Cook the entire recipe ahead and store it in the freezer. Thaw and reheat, then top it on hot dogs whenever you want it.
Frequently Asked Questions
✦ What’s the difference between hot dog chili and regular chili?
Hot dog chili is thinner, smoother, and usually a bit sweeter so it can coat a hot dog without overpowering it. Regular chili is chunkier and meant to be eaten with a spoon.
✦ What’s the difference between hot dog sauce and chili?
They’re essentially the same thing! Some regions call it “hot dog sauce.” It’s a bean-free, pourable chili designed for topping hot dogs, burgers, or fries.
✦ Can I make this ahead?
Absolutely. Chili always tastes even better the next day once the flavors marry. Just reheat gently before serving.

Notes
- Ground Beef: I like to use a blend of 8o/20 ground beef. I like the flavor this combo adds to the chili rather than a leaner combo like 90/10.
