Let’s make this cake!
Chocolate Cherry Dump Cake Ingredients
- Boxed chocolate cake mix: Your choice of brand and variety – devil’s food, triple chocolate, or super moist, etc.
- Cherry pie filling: Brand of your choice.
- Butter: Use real butter in this cake. Margarine can have greasy, unpleasant results. Very cold butter cuts the best. You can also run your knife under hot water to make cutting even easier.
Tips
- Add-Ins: You can add chocolate chips on top of the cake mix.
- Layered Not Stirred: Do not stir the ingredients, just pop it in the oven.
- Press down the cake mix: Where the cake mix meets the fruit is the most delicious, moist, fruity cake. Pressing down the filling into the fruit a bit creates more of that yummy layer.
- Slices Are Best! This recipe does not use melted butter. By placing the cold butter evenly on top of the mix, the cake cooks perfectly every time! Chill the butter and cut it into even slices. I found that using melted butter sometimes does not work out well.
Storing + Freezing + Make-ahead
How Long Can You Keep This in The Fridge? Once made, your 3-ingredient chocolate cherry dump cake will last up to two days in the fridge.
Can You Freeze This? I do not recommend freezing.
Make-Ahead: This cherry chocolate dump cake should ideally be served warm, right out of the oven.
Serving Recommendations
Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. You can also drizzle chocolate syrup on top for a nice presentation.

It sounds so very delicious!! Do you pour the cake mix powder over the pie filling or do you make the cake mix with eggs and water and pour the prepared cake mix over it? Thank you!
Hi, Cindy! Just pour the cake mix powder over the pie filling 🙂 Enjoy baking!
I looove all your dump cakes! Me and my son always makes it together. He had a great time spreading the cherry pie filling and he loves chocolate!
That’s so cute, Megan! I’m so happy you and your son enjoyed making this together! Thanks for the positive feedback and rating!!
How do you think this would work if I used a homemade cake batter and put it together the same way? Do you know of any dump cakes that use that idea? I know it takes away the ‘dump and go’ aspect but I really like homemade.
Wanda
Hi, Wanda! I haven’t tried this with homemade cake mix but that sounds perfect!
