My strawberry dump cake is everything a delicious strawberry dessert should be and made with only 3, easy-to-find ingredients. This cake has a buttery, crispy topping with a luscious layer of sweet strawberry filling.
It makes a generous 9X13-inch baking dish of yum. Perfect for family gatherings, church suppers, and potlucks! The strawberry layer is beautifully bright red so it’s great to serve for Valentine’s Day, 4th of July (garnished with fresh blueberries), and Christmas.
Once you try dump cakes, I’m guessing you’re going to want to try more!
Try my cherry pineapple dump cake (this version was my Moms favorite and we had this more times than I can count for Sunday supper!), pumpkin dump cake, cherry dump cake, and apple dump cake next!
What Is A Dump Cake?
A dump cake is an American dessert that’s incredibly delicious, and equally as easy to put together. There are 3 basic ingredients in most dump cakes. Canned pie filling, prepared cake mix, and butter.
The ingredients are layered (or dumped) in a baking dish and then baked. The texture is rather more of a cobbler or crisp than a cake.
Strawberry Dump Cake 3 Ingredients List
Only 3 ingredients!!!
- Strawberry Pie Filling: The perfect convenience ingredient.
- Cake Mix: You can make this strawberry dump cake with yellow cake mix, white, or even strawberry cake mix.
- Butter: You can use salted or unsalted butter.
Tips
- Press down the cake mix- After sprinkling the cake mix over the pie filling, gently press down the dry cake mix lightly into the fruit.
- Layer the butter- There are 2 basic ways to add the butter. Some people melt the butter and then try to evenly pour it over the cake mix. My preferred way to add the butter is to chill the butter and cut it into even, very thin slices. Layer the slices in rows over the top of the cake mix so you don’t get pools of butter or pockets of dry cake mix.
Strawberry Dump Cake Variations
- Strawberry Cheesecake Dump Cake: Adding cream cheesecake to a dump cake is super easy and crazy delicious. I’ve added it to my lemon dump cake. Check it out and see how easy it is to add.
- Chocolate Strawberry Dump Cake: For this variation, all you have to do is switch out the yellow cake mix with a chocolate cake mix.
- Strawberry Banana Dump Cake: After adding the layer of strawberry dump cake with pie filling, thinly slice fresh bananas over the pie filling then proceed with the recipe!
Storing + Freezing + Make-Ahead
- How Long Can You Keep This In The Fridge? The strawberry dump cake will stay fresh for 3-7 days in the fridge.
- Can You Freeze This?  I don’t recommend freezing it as a rule. I don’t care for the texture after freezing. That said, technically there’s no reason it can’t be frozen. For leftovers, try freezing in individual portions and reheating in the microwave for a quick treat!
- Make-Ahead Tips: This cake can be in the oven in literally less than 10 minutes. It’s best fresh, so there isn’t a ton of make-ahead prep to do!
- Food Safety: If you’d like more info on food safety check out this link.
Serving Recommendations
We love to serve this dump cake warm out of the oven with lots of good quality vanilla ice cream. Chocolate ice cream would be fabulous, too!
