Tamale Pie, where have you been? One bite sends my taste buds soaring and takes me back to my childhood. I missed you – come back soon!

When was the last time you had tamale pie? It’s been a really long time for me. I don’t know why.
When I was growing up, this was my all time favorite thing my mom made. I loved it when she served this for dinner! Well, this baby has gone back into my regular family dinner rotation!

Tamale Pie
Ingredients
Filling:
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 cup yellow onion, chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, chopped
- 4 large garlic cloves, minced
- 24 ounces 80/20 ground beef
- 1 cup frozen corn, thawed and well drained
- 1 (15-ounces) can black beans, drained and rinsed
- 1 (15-ounces) can petite diced tomatoes with green chilies, including juices
- 1/4 cup beef stock
- 1/4 cup pimiento-stuffed green olives, sliced
- 2 tablespoons dried chili powder
- 2 teaspoons dried ground cumin
- 1 tablespoon dried oregano
- 2 teaspoons brown sugar, packed
- 2 1/4 teaspoons salt, or more to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon hot sauce, or more to taste
Topping:
- 1 (8.5-ounce) box corn muffin mix
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup cheddar, shredded
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (177ºC).
- In a cast-iron skillet, add 1 tablespoon vegetable oil and cook the onion (1 cup), bell pepper (1), and garlic (4) until they are soft, or for about 7 minutes. Add the beef (24 ounces) and cook until it is no longer pink. Remove any excess fat. Add the rest of the filling ingredients and simmer uncovered over medium-low heat, or until most of the liquid has evaporated, about 20 minutes.

Make the topping
- In a medium mixing bowl, whisk all the topping ingredients together. Drop the corn topping over the filling and then spread it out evenly. Loosely tent top of the skillet with aluminum foil.

- Bake the pie in a preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and continue to cook for another 15 minutes.

I have a recipe for a tamale bake and I love it! Total comfort food with so much less effort than actual tamales!!
You know, I don't think I've ever had tamale pie!
My German mother wasn't very big on chilis…
Anyway, I guess I can fix that problem right now…maybe tonight?

Oh Barb I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for letting me know. Have a wonderful weekend!!!
I made this today and it is really good. No beans in the house, so I left them out, and used a 14 oz. can of corn. It is yummy and easy to make. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

Yes! Growing up my Mom made the BH&G Tamale Pie all the time and I absolutely love it. It's definitely a family favorite. This one looks delicious, but I do understand what you mean about the trouble of whipping the egg whites. Great post!
I've made something similar with cornbread, but I don't think I've ever had a tamale pie.

This does sound yummy and I will give it a try. In making the topping, you say “add the butter”, but I don't see butter in the recipe. How much should we add?
Thanks for sharing,
Barb
