What Is Frecas Con Crema?
Fresas con crema is a Latin dessert, which translates to “strawberries and cream” in English. And that’s just what it is. The sweetened cream sauce in this recipe is enriched with other ingredients to create the most delicious, scrumptious cream recipe that has ever been poured over fruit!
This is wonderful, serve as a light dessert, highlighting seasonally ripe strawberries, a decadent breakfast, or a mid-afternoon snack. This little gem of a recipe will have your family begging to eat all their fruit!

Fresas Con Crema Ingredients
- Strawberries: I only use fresh strawberries. Frozen can work, but the texture of fresh is far superior. I like to add thin slices of fruit first, then top the dessert cups with chopped fruit. Wash, remove stems, hull, then get ready to cut up!
- Mexican Crema: This is a type of cream similar to sour cream but with a thinner consistency and a richer, slightly tangier, less sour flavor. It’s similar to crème fraîche and is used in many recipes, including as a topping for tacos.
- Heavy Cream: I only use heavy cream; lower-fat substitutes don’t create the right texture and mouthfeel. Some recipes include evaporated milk, but we use a combo of heavy cream and sweetened condensed milk.
- Sweetened Condensed Milk: This adds sweetness, richness, and helps to create a thick, velvety texture.
- Vanilla Extract: This enhances the overall flavor of the dish by adding complexity, sweetness, and depth.
Tips + Variations
- Serving Dishes: You’ll need a 10-12 ounce clear glass or a small bowl. Clear glass allows you to see the beauty of this dessert.
- Different Fruit: This recipe is delicious with a mix of berries. My family loves this with a combination of blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries. It’s wonderful with mango, peaches, nectarines, or grapes, too.
- Strawberry Cream: Some recipes will suggest processing more of the strawberries with the heavy cream until it’s smooth. This is a delicious variation, but I must say, I prefer it as I make it in the recipe card below. I love the sweet, plain cream mixture with the strawberries.
- Media Crema: This is a Mexican-style product made by Nestle, available at most larger supermarkets. It’s Mexican table cream. Some people use this ingredient in the sauce. I prefer the combination on the recipe card, again. We use heavy cream in its place, which is richer and, in my opinion, makes a more delicious sauce.
- Greek Yogurt: Swap the sour cream out with vanilla, strawberry, or plain Greek yogurt. Doing so will make the dessert a bit more tart and add some great protein to the dish.
Storing + Freezing + Make-Ahead
- How Long Can You Keep This In The Fridge? Fresas con Crema is best eaten right away. As soon as the fruit is dressed, it begins to release moisture and continues to do so as it sits, causing the crema to dilute. The fruit will also soften. It will keep in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Keep in an airtight container.
- Can You Freeze This? No, this Mexican fresas con crema doesn’t freeze well.
- Make-Ahead Tips: You can wash, dry, and then store the fruit in the fridge.
