Blackberry Dumplings Ingredients
- Blackberries: Fresh or frozen. Blackberries have a high concentration of Vitamin C, Vitamin K, and fiber.
- Sugar: Granulated white sugar.
- Butter: I use unsalted.
- Nutmeg: This spice adds a nutty warmth to the syrup.
- Cinnamon: This adds warm flavor notes to the berries.
- Lemon Juice: The juice from fresh lemons balances the sweetness of the other ingredients.
- Flour: All-Purpose Flour.
- Baking Powder: This leavening agent will give the dumplings its light, springy texture.
- Milk: I use whole milk.
Tips
- Is It Done Yet? Once the blackberry syrup ingredients are simmering, stir frequently. Simmer until the volume is reduced by about half and coats the back of a spoon.
- Other Berries? You may use other berries, but blackberries are traditional.
- Make Them Springy: The dumplings are done when they spring back when touched.

Blackberry Dumplings
My blackberry dumplings is a comforting and vibrant Southern dessert made with blackberry syrup, cinnamon, and nutmeg, topped with fluffy dumplings.
Servings: 6 servings
Ingredients
Blackberry Syrup
- 2 quarts (or 2- 16 ounce bags frozen ) fresh or frozen blackberries
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 1/2 cups water
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
Dumplings
- 1 1/4 cups flour
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 3/4 cup milk
Instructions
- In a large, heavy-bottom saucepan, combine blackberries (2 quarts), sugar (1 cup), water (1 1/2 cups), butter (2 tablespoons), nutmeg (1/2 teaspoon), cinnamon (1/2 teaspoon), and lemon juice (2 teaspoons). With the saucepan uncovered, bring to a boil, then reduce heat until you have a light boil. Stir frequently so the sauce doesn't burn, until the fruit begins to break down and the sauce thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon, about 25-35 minutes (The blackberries will continue to cook and break down after the dumplings are added. You don't want the fruit to break down too much, at this point).
- As the sauce is cooking, begin the dumplings. In a large mixing bowl, add flour (1 1/4 cups), sugar (1/4 cup), baking powder (1 1/2 teaspoon), salt (1/2 teaspoon), and cinnamon (1/4 teaspoon) then whisk to evenly combine.
- Stir in the milk (3/4 cup) with a large spoon just until it comes together to form a sticky wet dough. Let the dough set for about five minutes.
- Drop the dough by the spoonful into the blackberry sauce. Reduce heat to medium and continue to simmer, covered, until the dumplings are springy and cooked through.
- Flip dumplings in sauce if desired. Serve warm with a scoop of ice cream!

Thank you for sharing your yummy looking recipe! I can’t wait to make it!😁
Thanks, Nancy! Enjoy 🙂
Hi Kathleen! I drooled on my phone screen, looking at this luscious dessert. Unfortunately, it would cost me $ 24+ for fresh berries, and we don’t have bags of frozen blackberries (or huckleberries, in any form). 😪
Do you think I could make this with a frozen blend of strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries, which is available year round? If so, should I keep the spices and quantities the same, or…? Many thanks!
Hey Terry. Yes this would be great with mixed berries. As for the spices, they would be perfect with mixed berries.
So yummy like your blackberry pie that I’ve tried!
Thank you Joy! I’m happy you enjoyed both of them 🙂
