KFC Famous Bowl Casserole Recipe Ingredients
- Mashed Potatoes: This recipe requires prepared mashed potatoes. It’s a great use of leftover holiday mashed potatoes or my make-ahead mashed potatoes. Store-bought or boxed mashed potatoes work great as well.
- Frozen Corn: Use yellow, white, or roasted frozen corn. Remember it needs to be thawed, drained, and heated before adding to the casserole.
- Chicken: Use either frozen chicken nuggets or popcorn chicken heated per the package instructions, then rough chopped into bite-size pieces that are easy to scoop up with a spoon or fork.
- Cheese: I used Colby jack in these pictures, but cheddar, or pepper jack all work deliciously well.
- Gravy: This is one of the best use for a jar of prepared chicken gravy. My other favorite way to use this invaluable ingredient if in my crockpot chicken and gravy recipe. Another pure comfort food meal!
KFC Famous Bowl Casserole VariationsÂ
- Switch the Chicken: If you’re looking to make this a little healthier, skip the fried chicken options and use chunks of rotisserie chicken or leftover grilled chicken. I like to toss rotisserie in some gravy. If you’d like to make it this way, grab an extra jar of the gravy and add enough to lightly coat all the chicken.
- Make Mine Shrimp: Sub the popcorn chicken with popcorn shrimp to mix things up a little.
- Thanksgiving Bowl Version: Use your Thanksgiving leftovers to make a Thanksgiving bowl casserole. When I make this version, I add extra layers. I layer mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans, turkey and top it off with lots of gravy. I generally skip the cheese when I make it this way.
- Change Your Potatoes: To mix things up sometimes I use frozen cubed Southern potatoes or Potatoes O’Brien.
Storing + Freezing + Reheating
- How long will these last in the fridge? You can store these in the fridge, covered with plastic wrap, for 3-4 days.
- Can these be frozen? Technically, yes, but since some of the ingredients have already been frozen, I prefer to make the casserole fresh.
- Reheat: Place leftovers in a bowl, cover with a damp paper towel, and microwave until heated through.
- Make-Ahead: This only takes a few minutes to make, no need to make this ahead of time.
- Food Safety: If you’d like more info on food safety check out this link.
Serving Recommendations
This casserole is a one-dish meal in one. If I have time, I do like to serve something green! A simple toss salad, my KFC coleslaw, garlic sautéed asparagus, or roasted broccoli are all favorite go-to’s with this casserole.
If you’re a regular reader, you know I’m crazy for a side of bread! I like to also either serve my Southern cornbread, Bisquick cornbread, or Bisquick biscuits to finish things up!
