CHICKEN BURGER INGREDIENTS
- Ground chicken: A healthy choice for burgers. This lean source of protein has lower levels of saturated fat and cholesterol.
- Panko breadcrumbs: This crispy Japanese bread crumb absorbs a little less oil than traditional breadcrumbs. You can substitute traditional breadcrumbs for Panko.
- Monterey Jack or Pepper Jack Cheese: If you like a little kick, use Pepper Jack. For a straightforward flavor, use Monterey Jack. The cheese acts as a binder in the burger.
- Mayo: This adds necessary fat to the burger, making it juicier. For a healthy choice, use traditional mayonnaise or avocado oil-based mayonnaise. You can substitute the mayonnaise with Greek yogurt. It works beautifully.
- Red onion: Grating red onion adds so much flavor to the burger, necessary when using a less flavorful protein (versus beef).
- Worcestershire sauce: This secret sauce gives the patty another layer of flavor.
- Garlic powder: Adding a little more spice to the meat mixture is always good!
- Salt + Black Pepper: Season with table salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste.
- Vegetable oil: For frying, use whatever vegetable oil you have on hand.
- Cheese slices: Select your favorite cheese to top your burger. You can also use a crumbled cheese like blue cheese or feta cheese.
- Hamburger buns: Choose your favorite kind of bun, such as regular white, brioche, or whole wheat.

WHY CREATE A DIVOT IN BURGER PATTIES?
We suggest creating a divot or indentation in the center of the chicken burger patties because when the proteins in the burger heat up, they shrink, causing the burger to puff up in the center and pull the patty out of shape.
Creating an indentation in the center of each patty counteracts this. I use my thumb to create a shallow dip about 1`1/2 inches wide.
TIPS
- More Seasoning: To change the flavor a bit, add some Italian seasoning to the chicken mixture.
- Mixing: Do not overmix the meat mixture for a tender patty.
- Internal Temperature: For safety reasons, be sure to thoroughly cook the burger. The chicken should be cooked to an internal temperature of 165 degrees. Use a meat thermometer or an instant-read thermometer.
- Top It! Dress your burger with your favorites like lettuce, tomatoes, sliced red onion, mayonnaise, Dijon, ketchup, BBQ sauce, bacon, avocado, pickles, etc.
WHAT TO SERVE WITH CHICKEN BURGERS
These burgers are excellent, slathered with my quick and easy burger sauce on brioche buns. I like to serve frozen French fries, air-fried potato wedges, or really good salad, like our favorite KFC coleslaw, pineapple coleslaw, Ina Garten potato salad, Mediterranean salad, strawberry salad, strawberry spinach salad, carrot salad, or easy broccoli salad.
If you want a starchier side dish, try my Hawaiian macaroni salad, classic macaroni salad, or my sweet Southern macaroni salad!
STORING + FREEZING + MAKE-AHEAD
- How Long Can You Keep This in The Fridge? Once cooked, your juicy chicken burgers will last up to three days in the fridge. Store in an airtight container.
- Can You Freeze This? The best way to freeze chicken burger patties is to place the uncooked meat in a freezer-safe container, label it, and freeze it. Thaw and cook. If you freeze them already cooked, simply warm them up in the microwave oven or in a pan on the stovetop.
