No bake recipes are a summer must the same way that air conditioning is.
When the temperature outside hits 90, 100, or more it’s hard to bring myself to turn the oven on. Why would I want to have 350- or 400-degree heat blasting into my already too warm house every time I open the oven?
I want my house to be a cool, relaxing place in the summer, not a hot, muggy replica of the environment outside.
Maybe that’s why I love this easy chocolate lasagna recipe so much—no need to use my oven!
The other thing that’s great about no bake recipes is that they’re usually pretty simple.
You just mix together a few ingredients and stick the whole thing in the freezer or fridge.
This recipe for no bake chocolate lasagna (aka-oreo lasagna) is no different. It’s so simple!
Just mix up each layer (Oreo, cream cheese/cool whip, and pudding), spread them on top of each other, and chill in the freezer.
It’s that easy. 10 minutes—maybe 15 tops—of prep time yields you a cold, delicious potluck or grill-out favorite.
And just WAIT until you taste this delicious concoction!!!
This is not a red sauce-and-meat dish.
(Just for clarification, in chocolate lasagna noodles are not part of the recipe. It’s a dessert that’s called a “lasagna” because of all the different layers the dish has. If you’re rolling your eyes and going “duh,” just know there are some folks who are going “ooooooooh! I get it now!”)
No bake chocolate lasagna is a dessert that everyone loves. That’s one of the things that’s great about it.
Desserts generally come with strong opinions, that’s what I’ve learned.
But serving chocolate lasagna is a great way to please everybody. Who can say no to Oreos, pudding, and whipped cream and cream cheese?
If you’ve ever had Olive Garden’s chocolate lasagna, you know how gooey and chocolaty it is. I love that dessert.
(I might order it a little too often, in fact. Please don’t judge.)
However, this no-bake manifestation of chocolate lasagna is a totally different dessert.
Olive Garden’s recipe is an actual cake that requires serious oven time. Plus, it doesn’t have any Oreos in it! (I don’t want to say they’re missing the best part, but….)
I think this no-bake manifestation is twice as good as Olive Garden’s recipe.
Not only is it easier (like, way easier) to make, but the layers are much lighter and, by virtue of the recipe being no bake,it’s totally cooler to prepare and enjoy.
This chocolate lasagna with Oreos is a much better summer dish.
This delicious layered dessert is also super versatile. It’s an awesome accompaniment to burgers, barbequed chicken, (actual) lasagna, gyros—whatever! Your summer menu goes along great with chocolate lasagna.
I make it for potlucks and grill-outs and picnics and… you get the idea. It’s a nice recipe for group events because of how pretty it is. Layered desserts always look good, but this easy chocolate lasagna is especially beautiful.
Whenever my kids have friends over (a summer staple at our house), I whip up a batch for them to munch on throughout the day.
Chocolate lasagna goes great with park days, pool days, zoo days, crafting days, and Netflix days.
One of my favorite ways to use this dish is as a birthday party dessert.
Birthday cake is great, but really heavy for summer parties.
I find that a hot, poolside birthday party is much better with a light, cold, creamy dessert than with dense cake and thick frosting like topping.

Just do a quick search and you’ll find hundreds of different recipes.
The one I’ve included is my personal favorite—it gets the balance of cream to pudding to Oreo just right. It’s not too creamy and not too crunchy.
Anytime whipped cream is used as a stabilizing agent I recommend Cool Whip. Let me be clear, this is about the only time I recommend Cool Whip. I love homemade whipped cream—it’s better tasting than Cool Whip every single time. But, it’s not as stable. For stability, go with Cool Whip. This recipe needs stability, needs Cool Whip.
I use instant pudding mix for this recipe instead of homemade pudding. Mostly I do this as a timesaver. Homemade pudding would be fine in this recipe. But it would significantly increase the overall prep time and don’t forget you’ll have to stand over the cooktop and stir while it cooks and thickens-not a summer bonus.
Likely if you’re making a recipe called chocolate lasagna calories are not super concerning to you. Because, honestly, there’s just not a lot you can do to reduce the calorie count. Chocolate pudding, Oreo, and whipped cream—that’s a pretty serious concoction. But it’s worth it.
Chocolate peanut butter lasagna is perhaps my favorite variation of this recipe. Peanut butter is an awesome addition. It works as one of the layers. Just melt some peanut butter down into a more liquid substance, spread it over the first layer of whipped cream, and continue with the recipe as normal.
A second variation that I quite enjoy is chocolate lasagna cupcakes. This is really just the same recipe, but assembled differently. Instead of assembling the recipe in a 9×13 baking dish, using a cupcake pan. Put a little of the crushed Oreo in the bottom of each cupcake spot, then the layer of whipped cream, the pudding, and the final layer. Each cupcake should have all four layers, plus the chocolate chips. Chill the final product as normal. These cupcakes work especially well to transport or send home with people.
The recipe calls for mini chocolate chips as the topping. That’s the best way to make it. I also like to add some extra crushed oreos just for good measure! But a few good quality chocolate bars will work just fine. Make sure they’re chopped into nice, small bits. Then sprinkle the chopped pieces just as you would the chocolate chips.
If I’m serving this dish to an audience of primarily kids, I’ll often put some gummy worms on the top. That’s because the core of chocolate lasagna is essentially the same as the classic “dirt cup”—Oreos, pudding, and whipped cream. Kids love it.

- Regular Oreo's~Divided - 1 Package
- Butter - 6 Tablespoons, melted
- Cream Cheese, Softened to Room Temperature - 8 Ounces
- Granulated Sugar - 1/4 Cup
- Cold Whole Milk - 2 Tablespoons
- Cool Whip, Thawed and Divided - 12 Ounces
- Chocolate Instant Pudding - 1-3.9 Ounce
- Cold Milk - 3 1/4 Cups
- Mini Chocolate Chips - 1 Cup
- Oreos-Roughly Crushed - 1 Cup
- Spray a 9 X 13 inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray
- Crush oreos then add melted butter and mix until well combined. Press oreo mixture evenly into prepared baking dish. Place in the fridge while you make the next layers.
- In a medium mixing bowl, mix the cream cheese with a hand held electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add 2 Tablespoons of the cold milk and the sugar and mix until well combined. Gently fold in 1 1/4 cups of Cool Whip then spread evenly over the Oreo crust.
- In another medium mixing bowl, mix together the chocolate pudding mix and 3 1/4 cups of cold milk. Stir mixture until pudding begins to thicken. Spread the pudding over the Oreo crust. Place in the fridge for 5-10 minutes, so the pudding layer can firm up more.
- Spread the rest of the Cool Whip over the top of the pudding layer. Sprinkle the top evenly with mini chocolate chips and 1 cup crushed oreos. Place in the fridge for 4-6 hours before serving.
